Overview of Options
Navigation
- Logo: Clicking on the logo in the upper left corner will bring you back to the main page.
- Jump To: Contents - the table of contents for the selected edition and volume; Locations - the locations visited for the selected volume; View Canto - display the selected canto with any options that are set. Please note that if terms are entered in the left-hand frame, they take precedence over any other settings there.
- Edition: Italian, English (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, H.F. Cary translations), Italian-English, English-English
- Volume:Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso
- Canto: 1-34 (Inferno) 1-33 (Others)
- Start/End: This allows you to look up specific parts of the text based on line numbering within the cantos. For example, if you see a reference such as: "O navicella mia, com'mal se' carca!"-Purgatorio, XXXII, 129, you can jump straight to it. Please note that an ending line number is required. You can then bookmark your favorite passages for later reference.
- Pagination: This allows you to view cantos in smaller pieces. The numbers given are the number of lines you will see per page.
Search
- Search: Enter your keywords in the box and this will locate them in the various editions. You can enter your terms in either Italian or English. Currently multiple words are treated as a phrase.
Preferences
- Preferences: This will allow you to choose what sort of graphics you wish to use to illustrate your edition of the Divine Comedy. Choices include Gustave Doré Sandro Botticelli, and Salvador Dali.
- Background/Foreground: If you prefer to use custom colors, enter their name or hex equivalents here. (Examples- White=FFFFFF, Black=000000).
- Use Audio: Many cantos in the Inferno have music accompanying them. Turn it off here if you would rather not hear it.
- Line Numbers: Turns line numbers on or off.
- Annotations: Turns annotations on or off. Annotations are marked by an underlined "a" after the line number. If there is no annotation, the space will be blank. Annotations by Longfellow and Cary are keyed to the line numbers in their translations, which may not correspond directly with the Italian.
Other Options
- Bookmarks: When viewing the text, you will note that you can "Bookmark this" selection, "View" your bookmarks, or "Clear" them. Bookmarks are saved using cookies, so your browser should have them enabled.
- Gallery: All of the images used throughout the text can be viewed by collection in the Gallery.
